Spring Skiing and Maple Sugaring Time are One Sweet Pairing

Turning Sap into Maple at the Trapp Family Lodge Sugarhouse

Spring is sweet for skiers and snowboarders in Vermont as daylight hours become longer, the sun’s warm rays soften the snow and maple sugarmakers fire up their evaporators. When the days gradually get warmer, sap begins to flow through Vermont’s Sugar Maple trees. Vermont is the leader in maple syrup production with more than 1.3 million gallons of syrup – or 42% of the nation’s maple syrup supply –  coming from our hardworking sugarmakers.

Maple sugaring time is a special time of year in Vermont, and sugarmakers across the state invite you to join them to experience first-hand the process of turning sap into syrup. Many of Vermont’s 1,500 sugarhouses are open to the public on April 2nd and 3rd for Maple Open House weekend, offering ample opportunities to participate in this fun tradition.

Maple Open House Weekend allows visitors to experience behind-the-scenes activities at a variety of sugarhouses in operation throughout Vermont during sugaring season. Meet and greet local sugarmakers who will answer all your questions about the sugaring process and provide educational demonstrations and samples of this beloved sweet. The experience at each sugarhouse is unique and the wide variety of maple products and maple recipes available from sugarmakers are sure to have you incorporating maple into your cooking, baking and imbibing this season.
