Vermont’s ski areas are ramping up for the winter season and are hiring for all types of positions. Employment opportunities extend well beyond what you might expect.

The top ski state in the eastern US (and #4 nationwide), Vermont draws visiting skiers from across the northeast and around the country, creating approximately 13,000 jobs the process.

With 30% of the $3 billion visitors spend in Vermont attributed to the ski industry, local businesses and towns—particularly in rural areas—often count on an influx of mountain-bound traffic and the business it brings. That stream of visitors also makes for a wide range of ski area jobs for Vermonters.

“If you’re someone who enjoys skiing and spending time in the mountains, there are plenty of opportunities at Vermont ski areas that let you do just that,” says Molly Mahar, President of Ski Vermont. “Most people are familiar with lift operations, guest services and food and beverage because those roles have a lot of interaction with guests. But to operate, ski areas need mechanics, electricians, accountants, marketers, HR and IT professionals and more—a host of staff you might not see on your average ski day.”

Free skiing and mountain views aside, another potential perk of working at a ski resort is the opportunity to progress in a role—or work in an entirely new one. Some areas are piloting a ‘follow-the-guest’ model where employees support guests where needed, possibly contributing in several roles throughout the day, in new teams or different departments.

“So much of working at a ski area is about community—with your coworkers, but also with guests,” says Mahar. “Having a positive experience is what brings guests back year after year. It takes a solid team and teamwork to provide that, and this is the time of year resorts are building their teams.”
